Life without limits for people with disabilities

We are progressing through a major upgrade to our website. Please stay with us during these changes!

United Cerebral Palsy Association of Hawai‘i is a non-profit organization and part of United Cerebral Palsy’s nationwide network of state and local affiliates.

Since 1959, our dedicated team of staff and volunteers have been providing services in the islands to:

  • Positively affect the quality of life for children and adults with cerebral palsy or other disabilities with similar service needs.
  • Provide direct services to at least 600 children through our Early Intervention Programs
  • Support the families involved.
  • Provide education on cerebral palsy as well as prevention possibilities and minimizing its effects.
  • Empower people with choices and opportunities for independence.
  • Provide information and links to other services in the community.
  • Research how cerebral palsy affects our kapuna as we age.

What is Cerebral Palsy?

Learn all about cerebral palsy HERE, but briefly, cerebral palsy is the number one motor disability in childhood (according to the US Center for Disease Control) and affects how a person’s muscles work. The term “cerebral palsy” describes chronic conditions affecting body movement and muscle coordination. “Cerebral” refers to the brain and “palsy” to muscle weakness or poor control. It can affect someone’s ability to move, communicate, eat, and take care of other personal needs. Please visit our About Cerebral Palsy page for more details and information about conditions that may exist along with motor difficulties.

What are we doing to help?

The earlier you find out that your child has cerebral palsy, the more opportunities we have to help. Our intensive Early Intervention programs are for children from birth to three years of age and are described in detail HERE, but we provide speech and language services, occupational therapy (to help with small muscle control and activities like feeding), physical therapy (to help with using our big muscles and assist with walking or using things like crutches or wheelchairs to move around), special education to help with the development of thinking and pre-academic skills), care coordination to keep all services together, and help transitioning to the Department of Education at age 3 if your child qualifies for special education.

We also run monthly “play dates” to help build play and social skills among young keiki.

We collaborate with other agencies to learn about opportunities for community engagement and recreational activities. Our collaboration with other agencies includes assisting with the transition to adulthood.

There is now evidence that there are more adults with cerebral palsy than children. UCPA Hawai’i understands this, and while our direct services continue to focus on our keiki, we have begun a longer-term project to investigate the impact of cerebral palsy on adults and our kapuna as they/we age.

What can you do to help?

We have several fundraising opportunities and other ways to help that are detailed HERE, however, we are best known for our DUCKIE RACES on O’ahu and the Big Island! Duckies are truly cute and fun, but each and every duckie raises funds to provide those critical services to our keiki. The donation of clothing and HI5 bottles and cans also help! Our GOLF Tournament is another big way you can contribute. Our next GOLF date is May 9th and you can register VERY SOON! There are also opportunities for you volunteer at our evdents. MAHALO!
